Around Ireland By B&B: Rockview Bed & Breakfast, Cashel, Co. Tipperary

Rock of Cashel

The view from our window at Rockview. That’s
the Rock of Cashel in the distance.

Rockview House looks for all the world like a typically subuirban Irish home, except that it’s right in Cashel and just out back, across a field, is the famous Rock of Cashel, one of Ireland’s premiere historical sights.

We stopped here en route from the wild west of Ireland to Dublin, figuring it would be as good a place as any to break our journey and see a bit of the surrounding region. And so it proved to be. From here it’s an easy shot to Caher to the south and the medieval city of Kilkenny to the east, where we sampled the delights of the annual Kilkenny Arts festival.

Best of all, we were within walking distance of the Rock of Cashel and the spiffy, modern home of Bru Boru, a troupe of tradional Irish musicians and dancers. Think Riverdance on a smaller, more homespun, scale.

The B&Bs owner, Mrs. Breda O’Grady, had wisely decided to escape the madness of Bank Holiday weekend, so we were left in the care of here nieces, charming young women who were learning the B&B ropes as they looked after us. The fresh fruit and yogurt breakfast here was enormous and with a sprinkle of meusli made for a most filling meal.
